Man.....some of you guys can really lay some paint!
We have been using the Duplicolor MetalCast and have had good results but nothing like some of the cars that we are seeing here.
I am assuming that everyone is using air brushes? If so what is the best way for me to get started and any pointers?

I have been using House of Kolor paints on all of my cars. I use both a Paint Gun and a Airbrush to paint my cars. I use a cheap spray gun I got on ebay for primer and a Sata Mini Jet for both base and clear coat. I use the airbrush to spray some cars but mainly to add flames or strips and touch ups if needed. If you are in the market for an airbrush I personally recommend a Iwata HP-CS. You can get one for around a 100 bucks. It is a all around airbrush that spray a very fine line to a wide pattern. Alot of the cars on here are using the stencils that the Jewkes sell. Hope this helps. Any more questions please ask

I use an accuspray gun and an Iwata airbrush also. I am not familiar with the paint you mentioned but the main thing with a spray can is getting a tip with a fan pattern instead of a cone. I know HOK has rattle cans now too. I have seen it at some of the WalMarts here in Phoenix. If you can't find it there do a search online, I know there are a few distributors that carry it. Hope that helps.

My budget only allows for SATA/Sharpe knock-offs for my spray guns. Whole set only cost about $80. I use DuPont Chroma-Premier automotive paint. I've just started using Sikken 2-part catalyzed clear. I also use DuPont MasterTint Crystal EFX pearl powders..... I've found that a little 'over-thinning' of the base color gives me a smoother finish with the "look-a-like/econo" guns I use for spraying. Here in Florida, humidity is a PROBLEM. I have 2 water separators on the compressor. Then a screw-on disposable one on the gun it-self. Still not in A1's league.......but I'm working on it ;D

When you guys are using HOK paint is it quick and hard drying? I have had a lot of luck with duplicolor drying hard but had a lot of difficulty when using the regular Kylon paints.

The HOK base colors dry very quickly. The clear coat takes a good 24 hours before you really want to touch it. The best place to buy HOK is from www.coastairbrush.com and you can buy it in small amounts. The only problem that I have found with it is that is is not the cheapest paint to use. We all would love to be able to paint like A1 Paint Ninja. I know alot of time and patients must go into each one of his cars.

krylon is an enamel paint. that could take a life to dry. Lacquer paints = quick dry, high gloss, good stuff.
Thats why after two weeks of drying with the Krylon my sons still got fingerprints all over their nicely painted cars! The first step is getting a quick dry and a hard surface. Were going to try and play around with somemore paint and see if we can start experiementing with all of the cool stuff you guys are doing on here.

M7, If you don't want to jump in with both feet for spray guns, hoses, filters, regulators AND a compressor -you might try this option: They are about $4 each can get them at Lowes,HomeDepot,ACE hardware ect....these little self-contained sprayers will spray just about anything you can pour into the glass screw on bottle that comes in the kit. Turns anything liquid into a 'spray-bomb'.... I've used them for years for Derby workshops for the kids.

Here is another alternative if you are not ready to go to the "gun" yet. Emerson told me about Killer Cans a while back. They look awesome & I'll be trying some as soon as I use up all the Duplicolor in the garage. (M7.....if using a spraycan - the Duplicolor is very good though) For those interested in Killer Cans: www.kustomrides.com/home.php(Be sure to check out the video on Killer Chrome.......awesome!)

David is right - the Killer Chrome is awesome looking & seems easy to apply. The Killer Cans I mentioned earlier are the Alsa brand paint that David mentioned in his post. I saw the Killer Chrome Kit for $130 bucks (large) & $90 bucks (small) on the link I posted earlier: Large Kit includes: - Killer Chrome (400 ml or 6.5 oz, which covers about 6.5 sq. ft.) - Killer Speed Clear (2 x 400 ml) - Killer Black Base (400 ml) - Polishing Cloth (Hey David - you might talk to these guys & offer a link to their website in exchange for some free paint for all of us! Hehehehehehe!!!!!!!!!!!)

There isn't anything wrong with an inexpensive gun. I have worked with many guys that have $500 paint guns that still can't pull off a simple solid color. It's not the gun that makes the paint job, it's the monkey behind it that matters most. Bottomline, don't beat yourself up over a knock off. If it works . . . it works. Besides, if your car spanks everyone else at the end of the race it doesn't matter if you finger painted it or had John Kosmoski paint it for you. But of course, when you come up against A1 that's a different story.

I am with Joker and use Kustom Rides paints as well. The owner, Bill is real friendly and will explain what you need to get started and answer all your questions over the phone. Another nice thing about Kustom Rides is they sells in small quantities.
One thing about airbrushing that is so kool are the candy concentrates, being able to add a little or a lot of tint to your paint is da bom. This is something that rattle cans just can not do.
