Part of a car I am working on involves balsa; does it need any special prep before painting (like a sealer) that pinewood doesn't normally need; or, do I just primer it like pinewood?
Thanks.

All you need to do is skim coat it with some autobody filler.. Don't put alot on just wipe some on and wipe it off tight... That will fill the little holes in the grain... Then apply Duplicolors High Build primer surfacer it works great I just used some today... fills nice and drys fast and sands smooth... Spray 4 coats and then let it dry for 1 hour then sand it with 320 grit dry ... then spray 4 more coats and let dry 1 hour then you can either wet sand it or dry sant it with 500- 600 grit... Then you will have a smooth piece to paint... You don't need to use sanding sealer's on any wood...... Primer will take care of it....

You can get the Duplicolor at most checkers or pepboys, I don't think autozone carries it. I've also seen it at some wallymarts. It does work well, be sure to wipe off the spraytip with thinner of some sort, it has a tendancy to cause spitting if you let it build up there too much.

I was looking at getting USC Icing Polyester Finishing Putty (with hardener). is there something better than this for the price range ($20ish)?
Thanks,

USC makes good stuff but it's a little harder to sand. I prefer Evercoats Metal Glaze. It's easier to work with IMHO. Either one will work and are probably within a couple bucks of each other in price.

I've always 'sealed' the wood with shellac- Zinsser- first. For a more detailed explanation see the thread on "bondo & axle trees" Tips & Tactics category.

HillyBilly, AutoZone has it , I saw it yesterday.... Checker and AutoZone are the same price... $5.49 a can.. I wish I would of went to WalMart first, cause they had it cheaper.... I was pretty impressed with that primer.... my first time using it... I probably not the last time either....
