I have built PWD cars with my sons for 10+ years. Ready to take the leap and build and compete at PDDR. In BSA we were allowed to use whatever wheelbase we wanted so we have always built using a long wheels base. I have noticed here that many use a shorter wheel base. I don't have any experience in building with a shorter wheel base.
Is it better than a long wheel base?
Thanks a ton for the help. Sorry about the stupid question.

They say that the only stupid question is the one not asked. That being said, the rules ask for the short wheel base for "pure stock" (4 3/8 inch) and "door slammer" (5 inch) the longer wheel base is ok for the other classes. Personal preference dictates what you do on your car. Some like long, some like short and most are very fast cars. Check the photos for ideas.

Check out the rules section of the forum under each class for more information... and the specific rules for each class..

Hello Speed, Welcome to the board ;D.it is always nice to see new faces around here.As far as your question goes, you need to decide which class or classes you are interested in competeing in. As Aline noted the 'Pure Stock" class will require that you use the stock out the box wheel base, this is a very popular class lots of fun ;D ;D ;D.all the other classes will allow you to choose whether you run short or long or something inbetween. Just continue to read the posts here on the board and make sure to keep asking those questions . Good luck and Happy Racing. KOH

I wont say one is better, but if you look at Stock videos, there are more Long WB than short....what does that tell you? I also like the staggard. More weight towards the back is better, more stability (wheels forward) is better. I think the design and weight placement will partly dictate what wheelbase would be better for that design. Just my $0.02! Thanks RC

Thanks for the responses!!
Yes we will definitely read and follow the rules. Actually when only short wheelbase was legal it was easier. You had no choice.
I had read somewhere that theoretically a short wheelbase car should be faster. We have done some playing around and the short wheel base cars are not even close to the long wheel base cars. The SB cars are 2 - 3 100ths of a second slower. This is with very, very good rear alignment and riding the rail.
Thought maybe I was missing something. But if many of the stock cars are now using long WB then I am more comfortable continuing with a long WB
