Does anyone know of a place that sales Tungsten weights that is cheaper, then say Max-Vel?
I have been on the web and calling wholesale suppliers and they are more expensive then the PWD sellers.

I guess maybe I'm old school but in my opinion tungsten isn't any faster than lead besides lead is free and the money saved can buy things that do make you go faster.
Just my opinion Tim

I made the mistake of using tungsten and got the weight too close before painting. Tungsten doesn't drill worth a #@*%!! I've gone back to lead. It is for sure easier to work with.
Oh, sorry, the question is if I knew where to buy tungsten for less than at Max V. No..
I guess I got carried away with the fact I just had a bad experience and at any cost I probably wouldn't use it again.

I like tungsten because you can get more weight in smaller places but I think basically if you want to use tungsten, you gotta pay for it. $$

Max V is the cheapest place that I have found for tungsten.
I use lead in all of my cars. Just be safe when melting it.

I have learned a TON since i joined PDDR. just hope the knowledge is reflected on the track. Thanks all.

I have a melting pot similar to this one here I bought at a garage sale it works great, I do all my melting and pouring outside since lead fumes are not the best thing for you. www.hiltsmolds.com/LeadMeltingEquipment.htm

The 4 or 5 fastest cars I have every built have ALL been made with Tg....AWANA and BSA cars. Having said that, I have SOME lead cars that are faster than SOME of my Tg cars, but the top 5 have been tg.
Agree with lead being easy to work with at final weighing...but the tg beads work great.
Rail Hugger...Great link...I just bought that pot 2 months ago and it work well.
ALSO: Take the top of a metal fence pole (the decorative cap) Screw a large metal screw in the top and have it stick out... THis will act as a place to grab it with vice grips when it gets hot. Put you lead in and use a torch to melt. You now have hot lead that can be poured out.
Thanks to a friend for this info....Not as good as a pot but is a cheap alternative. RC

want my two cents, great ideas above for melting pots, i use a 1.5 inch black pipe coupling with a plug in the bottom, the heavy mass of steel helps maintain the heat while pouring. As far as pouring the lead in the cavity of the car, if you have a nice clean cut cavity you can line it with a heavy mill tin foil to help keep from burning your car. This way you can remove the lead when it solidifies a little sooner, and drill or cut to a close weight. Another tip, cut small chunks of lead and set in the cavity to help cool the molten lead quicker.

(Very good points so far)........tungsten will only benefit you if it is placed in close proximity with no gaps. It is 1.7 times heavier than lead - so the cubes & plates are best to achieve a concentrated COM. Your body design will have to accommodate a routed cavity to hold this shape.
I personally don't like to limit design - so melting lead is my choice.

hmmmmmmmm what weighs more:
5 ounces of lead or 5 ounces of titanium
?
Ummmmm...5 oz of paper weigh the same too POOR example. As well as you build cars (from reading here) I KNOW that YOU know this is a bad example. The DENSER the material, the more it can be concentrated low and back on the car .... PERIOD. NOW, this will NOT compensate for someone's inability to do the other things right. If you have a wedge car that is 1/2" tall in the back then yeah, tg is a waste. If you want a 1/4" car with wheels way in the back and a small cavity behind it, then tg does the trick. RC

When you say "you (94)" I guess you are referring to "ME" "RC"
I dont know WHERE you got that I have an issue with Mood. I acknowledged his ability to make cars, I didnt call him any names or dis him in any way, so I dont know how you derived that from my post. I was stating why I thought the "anology" of 5 oz is 5 oz is not a valid point because that would imply that we could use 5 ounce of plastic, and that would weigh the same on the car as 5 oz of lead. I agree with the other factors of ease of use, melting, cost, weight control, etc. I just stated a fact.
Are we not supposed to present a counter argument (both sides of the issue) for people reading this to learn because we are not all "PROS" like you? Let me know and I wont try to help others as they have helped me.
But as far as YOUR comment about current issues with mood, there are NONE, I guarantee it! RC

I poured my first lead weight today into a car. I took the black pipe idea since I have some in the garage. I also used the free lead tire balance idea and got some from the BP I visit on a regular basis. They gave me about 20 lbs of scrap lead. Now I can make 80 cars without running out. Tungsten weight = over priced The ideas on this Forum cost me $0. Thanks everyone for the input.. Now to get this car to roll straight..

Pepto = Lead / Tungsten combination 3/8" lead cylinder in the rear and Tungsten carbide inserts in front of the rear axle. 234 When I am not using expensive cylinders or cubes I like to use small square shaped carbide inserts. I have found that square shaped inserts are the easiest to put into a derby car. The last auction I won was for 9 pounds of used carbide inserts and I think I paid just a little over $30 Not a bad price when you consider that 4 ounces of cylinders or cubes will cost you over $20 when you include the shipping. You can also pick up some cheap lead by following this link. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7245147913&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/7245147913_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8QQsubmitsearchZSearchQQfviZ1 All you have to do is clip the ring eye and snip to length. Drill a 25/64 hole and insert the weight. Its time we got this thread back on track and start trying to help each other as Rail Hugger intended when he started this thread. Come on guys!
