Congratulations on an excellent forum! This is my first post, but I have read the boards extensively. My boys have been racing for three years now. We finally achieved some success this year by following many of the techniques described here. (thank you )
We have been in Royal ambassadors with thin wheels. We have an opportunity to get another race in this year by participating in an Awana race. There are a couple of rules that paint us in a pretty tight box.
"wheel axles may not be installed at an angle. Wheels must ride flat on the track surface"
"wheelbase maximum is 4 inches"
Other typical height / weight rules enforced.
Our success has largely been with 3 wheels touching with the rears canted. We have a basic understanding of rail riding and intend to use on these cars.
With those parameters I am requesting any and all thoughts on the questions below and any other ideas to improve speed:
1. How far from the rear would you put rear axles?
2. What type of COM ? (we will be using lead bullets that are 3/8 cylinders - have a lot of them and they are free)
3. How much cant can one use and it still appear relatively straight?
4. Best recommendations on how to employ that cant (we have a block and a drill press)
5. With 'straight' axle rule do you recommend bent axle on front dominant or using wax paper shims?
6. Steer recommendations for the above configuration?
7. Should non- dominant spin free since it has to touch or do you lock it down to the body like a three wheeler?
Thank you for any thoughts. According to my wife this "pinewood bug" I have been bitten by is my midlife crises. (we are the proud new owners of a best track - thanks Steve!)
