My son and I want to make our first PDDR car and want to purchase a mini mill that can also be used to drill the axle holes with the block. Any suggestions on a good one would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Rick

A year ago I wanted to do the same. I was looking at the Proxxon Micro Mill www.minicrafttools.com/37110.html . I emailed Proxxon USA representative. Here was his reply... Yes, the mill will do the same thing the drill press will do just more precise. They only back draw is that the mill does not have a handle to lower the drill into the material. You will have to use the hand wheel on the top of the back column to lower and raise the milling head (drill bit). The mill comes with the x-y table and a set of stamp clamps. You can purchase the x-y table # 27100 for your drill press. It comes with all of the mounting screws for the base of your drill press and also has a set of step clamps in the box.In the end, it would have been too annoying lowering/raising the drill. I purchased the Proxxon Drill Press. A note on that, I recently removed the X-Y Table. Seems to slow me down moving the block from one side to the other. I plan on making a table that is larger if I can do it while keeping it level. You may consider the drill press and a small router. I did purchase the Proxxon router, but in retrospect - any router would do. It sometimes bogs down on different areas of the wood.

My interest in a mill that will drill is because I wanted to clean out presice weight pockets. you bring up a good point. Can the drill mill ? using the xy table with some precision? I.e. can you bring the bit down and then route out the car by moving its position with the xy table?

All this is based on the Proxxon products. I think it would be an excellent routing machine (i.e. the mill). However, at what cost? If the handles on the mill are anything like the ones on the XY table (and they look identical) -- then it will be quite frustrating rotating those little handles fifty times till you have them in the down position, then you'll do the same to rotate it back up. To perform 'clean' routing, just use a dedicated router with a fence you create to keep the straight lines. Keep your drill press just for drilling holes with the block. What brand are you considering? Does the Micro brand have a mill that has a handle and not the rotating handles?
