I was wondering what the ideal amount of "solid" weight a car should have compared to wood weight.

Most of my cars after all body work is complete weigh in around 12-13 grams. I have had a few that are less and a few more but most are in that range. I hope this helps.

As long as you have 3.5 ounces of added weight or more you are fine. that being said most of my cars are closer to 4 ounces added weight. I like to use a 5/16" thick slab for the body to keep it stiff and light. Anything thicker is not needed. Also cars thicker than this can run into problems if the rears are canted...

Thanks, really excellent advice. I was at about 3.1 ounces so I need to shave a touch off my car. Now having said that what are preferences for weighting, I've used tungsten and melted in lead. Whats the easiest way to get that much weight into such thin cars?

Easiest is a tungsten disc. Just drill a one inch hole. I like to drill through the bottom of the car about 1/2" through and then cut the car out. To prevent breaking the car body. lined up between axles is the farthest back you would ever want to go. 1/4" forward the furthest out...
Sweet Spot is my weight of choice. I drill a 1" hole 1/2" through the body. Cut the car and then saw out a square shape. or even drill two holes cut the car and then saw/chisle a rectangular shape for making an adjustable COM weight. Add tungsten putty to get weight correct.
This assumes you can drill axle holes and cut axles PDDR style rules. If you are making a car for something else then let us know.
Cubes also work OK if you group them tight. Not my favorite.
I really do not like the small cylinder weights. They do not make a very good car.
I also like the cars to be slabs with no holes in the middle. If there are holes cover with packing tape...
If Mod the bone shape works ok but I still prefer the slab style...
Best Wishes - W
