From 1979 "Copper Canyon" Pack-District winner. Car ( and cars from 2 years before) used Tungsten. Anyone out there use tungsten any earlier? It was hard to get your hands on it back then. I used tungsten slugs for electron beam evaporation in some metal systems. If contaminated, it had to be scrapped. I thought free pinewood weights with the benefits of higher density than lead would be great. The problem was cars built in the first two years had the weight too far back and too high. They flew off the track. The flash on the axle nails was not filed off. A very smooth bead of epoxy covered the end of the nail and wicked down to the nail diameter. This was coupled with a severe cant. Axle canted enough to run on edge without flash in the middle of the wheel touching the track. The severe cant forced the wheel to center on the epoxy "bushing", and only touch on a very small surface. The body of the car had to be beveled to not touch the wheel. Car was set to run straight. After both my boys were out of cubs, they changed the rules and added "must run flat" over 30 years ago, and it is still in the rules *** *** *** *** *** TODAY *** *** *** *** ***. I help kids in the neighborhood from time to time and have to make "flat" running cars. Note: wear on the edge without any wear on the seam in the middle of wheel ;D

Well, the old soldier has seen better days. Weights pulled out years ago. Wheels and axles ground up a bit with kids playing with it in the dirt. It's last duty was carrying an egg in bubble wrap and in a tube taped to the top and sent crashing into a brick wall from an old wood track start section. Winner was fastest car to also NOT break the egg. Also had some bubble wrap and foam on the front bumper. The old soldier won, but it was a bit like watching a sad rematch of over the hill heavyweights all winded and still swinging for the fences. A real demolition derby. ;D I will send something in some month that can still roll.
