one of the dads from our pinewood derby race wants to build us a track. (we had to borrow one) he said he has several pieces of flat PVC. can anyone think of any reason why this would not be a good material to use.

he also works for a glass company and was thinking of using plexi-glass as the guide rail. it can be smooth and polished and would make a good track i think.

any thoughts

pony: Don't over heat the axle. I did that once too and I had to resand the axle. Two seconds of the flame is all I did. I hold the axle in the drill chuck, heat it then immediately spin it against the silly putty. I then wipe the axle down by hand. Feb 23, 2018 22:02:58 GMT -7

pony: I do the same technique with the hard ski waxes which I use a lot. You can heat the axle or if you don't want to use the heat just hold the hard ski wax against the spinning axle. Use high speed. The ski wax transfers by friction and the heat of the spin. Feb 23, 2018 22:06:02 GMT -7

pony: Remember though you still need some form of silicone on the axle after the ski wax. Plastics on steel always needs silicone. I don't have the technical know how to do a video and post it. It's the same process as polishing compounds and polishing wheels. Feb 23, 2018 22:09:47 GMT -7

pony: In everyday Cub scout races the Jig or the Max-Pro is good enough. The Silly Putty was only .001 faster. If the Silly Putty feels old and dried out I'd try to get some more and just use the heat of the spinning axle to get it to transfer over to the axle. Feb 23, 2018 23:45:42 GMT -7
