Let's have a show of axles - I mean hands that's taking on the Royal Ranger Smackdown at ECD............. I'm working on one right now. All I have to say is none of your tools will work without adapters, bushings etc. Since you have to use the dowels to secure the axles this may limit some designs. But may spark new ones too! My kit came with tractor lug wheels with tread on the sidewalls. Yikes! Maybe we'll call these Rumble Runners? I did order some more kits hoping for better wheels. My kit wasn't pine wood either. It may be Poplar? It's twice as heavy as pine! What about these axles? I don't think these screws could hold a picture on the wall. I'm trying to overcome the shortcomings of the kit within the rules to make what I believe to be the fastest gravity powered tractor. All it needs is a 5 speed gearbox! ;D

Carolina & myself talked about truing up tread & coning the hubs on wheels, & tapering the heads & grooving axles (screws )

These wheels are really loose on the axles. At first glance the wheels look pretty true. But mine are a mess..

our block looked like pine to me & very ruff cut but slots for dowels were surprising straight & square

What did your block measure in width? Mine was 1.75 inch.

FAST, It is a different challenge for sure. I never worked with Basswood before. I thought it is easy to carve? But my wood is hard as a rock and my carbide blades smoked in cutting it. Maybe I got the one kit with Ironwood?!! It's got me thinking out of the box. I hope my car does the Royal Rangers proud.

Ok, The field looks like it's going to be Jewkes, Carolina, Shade Tree, FAST, W and myself so far in the Royal Ranger Shoot out. There is also the challenge maker Corvid. Is there any others building a Royal Ranger? Any predictions?

Anyboby got any tips on how to polish the bores on these Ranger wheels? The bore is about 1/8" and I'm not use to polishing one that big. I tried an extra fluffy pipe cleaner but I think it can be done better.

I do not and repeat do not like working with these screw axles. If I can figure out how to polish the big bores in the wheels, I'm sure I could pick up a little more speed. ;D
