Wow, what a weekend! It started last Sunday, I was at my mom’s house (typical Sunday get-together with the family) and my brother casually asks if I’m racing in the pinewood derby that Milwaukee Harley Davidson (local Harley dealer) is having. He said he had been hearing it advertised on the radio. Since I was on vacation the week before, I had heard nothing about this. I checked into it on Monday and of course was eager to participate. The rules were pretty wide open, but they said there would be one official who would ultimately decide of your car fit the rules or not. So I started building a couple cars, extended wheelbase, standard wheelbase, new BSA wheels, old BSA wheels, etc – just to make sure I had all the bases covered. There were 2 classes being run, the scout rules and the Mad Max class. Mad Max was a 9 inch car, max weight of 10 oz. Full width axles, wheel bearings and razor wheels are allowed.
When I go to enter my cars on Friday night, I was under the impression that you were allowed to enter one car per class, but they took all of them! Sweet! Just on a whim, I brought along my yellow stockr (Hammer Down) that all of you have seen (and that most of you have beaten). Well, that car ended up winning – they also pulled me aside about ¾ through the event and said that there was a good chance that I would take, first, second and third and would it be OK if I just took the first place trophy. (I wouldn’t expect or accept more than one from a single class anyway). And as for the Mad Max – no one had bearings and I was the only one with modified wheels, so I won that as well. Many people that day learned of proxy/league racing and the PDDR.
So I won the 2 big trophies, dinner and a limo ride to and from the restaurant and then 2 guys come up to me who work for the marketing company advertising the event and say they are going to fly me to NYC to be on the Fox & Friends morning show this Friday morning…..yikes! They are going to try to get a track set up and have some local scouts there to run some races. They contacted me this morning asking what flight times work for me….so let’s hope this all actually comes together. I will keep you posted as I know more. All I can say is Thank You Jewkes brothers, Thank You MB4hire and Thank You to everyone that races at PDDR – you have all made this such a great hobby to have and the knowledge that you share is awesome!
