Jim, For the ones I made, I mixed some white embers glue and water together for a paste like mixture. I applied 2-3 coats with a small paint brush. The last coat was mostly embers. After each one dried, I sanded lightly with some 600 sandpaper. I have them primed, and will be applying paint when it drys out and this tropical storm passes.
I'm sorry, but I suffer from "c r c", can't remember crap and I can't give credit to where I read idea. Maybe others can provide additional input or ideas. Good luck.

Once I get mine shaped and sanded the way I want them, I go over with a light coat of Evercoat Metal Glaze and then sand with 320 grit and then 600. Next I put 2-3 light coats of sandable primer and then sand again then paint.

Paint it with 5 minute epoxy. Sand and paint. Let it dry for about 2 hours before you sand. Sand with 400 grit. Use a stiff brush like a plumbers acid brush. Fills and seals in one coat. Plus it skins the piece for strength. Works for me.

Another thing that works great is fiberglass resign..
Mix a small amount of it then get a small paint brush and paint a coat over the wood and let harden... sand it, then primer...
If there is alot of grain then do what Carolina said use some filler.
All of the above statments that everyone posted work, just try the one that suits your needs the best and can aford.

Uh oh...I'm working on mine right now. Last night I just added regular ole sandable primer. I haven't painted yet, so before I learn a lesson the hard way, why won't regular primary work and prep like any other wood?

Balsa is like a sponge. Sealing it like mentiond above keps the primer and paint from soaking into the wood .
