Rookie question here. I've never used tungsten discs and about to give it a shot. If I want to get more aggressive with the COM, I need to put the disc where the axles are. The car is thin so how do you embed the disc into the car? Do I just cut the end of the axles off so they don't get in the way (e.g. I can drill thru the entire car)?

Welcome to PDDR and thanks for posting. Yes You will want to cut the axles. I drill axle holes with The Block then use a forstner bit to drill about .5 inches into the wood block for the disc, them bandsaw the car down to 3/8 or 1/4 inch then cut the axles to fit leaving no space for the 1/32 spacing body to wheel. If you leave the extra 1/32 I find the axle do not push in far enough. I use a blacktip permanent marker to mark the axle before cutting. The hole for the disc goes all the way through the car. Place the disc flush to the top for PDDR track. No clearance rules basically in the very center of the track. Or you can center the disc on the axles. Just dont leave the disc hanging all the way out the top. :-)

To cut the axles I use a Kline Journeyman 2000 set of wire/nail cutters from HomeDepot. They have a blue handle and are about one foot long. They work great but they may be over kill.

To add to W's post. After cutting the axle it's best to chamfer the cut end. Round it over some using a grinder, dremel or other methods. Because if not your sharp and slightly larger ( snipped area) axle can tear the wood when inserting.

If you leave the extra 1/32 I find the axle do not push in far enough. Is this issue a result of using the short drill bit only?

1/32 is a small amount. That is the gap I use for wheel to body. I find if I leave that amount on the axle length that I place the round in and then the fully prepped axle and wheels that I can not push the axles in far enough because it is hitting the disc. Which means another cut/grind...
For the front axle holes it is not so sensitive and even with the shorter bit I could cut them longer which I do for the DFW because I want to have a bit more axle on that one to make sure it does not move on me...

Also if your tungsten disc is not as snug as you would like it, rub wood glue on the iterior of your disc cut out. Let it dry then tap your disc in gently until it is flush or you meet your targeted track clearence. Welcome to PDDR hope to see you on the track.
