I am scratching my head.... I decided try my luck at my own wheel prep and i can get the tread to look like a black mirror, but each wheel has left-right wobble on the axle when i test spin it.
i am using a drill press with a pro tool to hold the wheel and sanding using a square block with sandpaper and gently applying pressure.
what else do i need to add to this routine to get rid of the wobble? i bought some Edge wheels and they were perfect with no wobble. I want to mimic.

I prepared my first 6 cars just like you explained about 5 years ago. Really they looked great. I even took a file to the wheels and reshaped them too. At the time they were fast enough to win at a local Walmart race. But I can tell you that without a lathe or shaver you cannot get the wheel to under .001 inch run out or less. So basically your running wheels that are not true. These wheels will bounce up and down and wobble left and right. I know this because I took the wheels that I thought were good. Then I turned them professionally and these wheels were not even close to being round! Without good wheels your car doesn't reach it's potential. I really would suggest to buy some Jewkes wheels and axles.
