I have recently purchased the Proxxon mini drill press so I can use my "Block" and since I am going to dive into this with both feet I thought I might as well get some more information from the pros. I would like to try my hand at my own wheels. I was wondering if anyone out there has purchased a mini-lathe or cnc machine that they use to create their own winning wheels or are most of you like me and get your wheels from the Jewkes brothers?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Scruffy - I myself have a Sherline 4000 that I use to taper axle heads and to cut grooves just the way I want them (depth, width, location etc...). I myself haven't tried making my own wheels with it yet. My son on the otherhand who is 9, sat down at it and working all by himself did a pretty good set for his first try. I need a more accurate mandrel to mount the wheel before I tackle it. I have used it to modify a set Holeshots I plan on using on a SuperMod in the future and it did great. Working with one is fun, I just wish I new more about cutting my own tools. Our local community college offers a machining class that I'm going to look into taking just to learn more about the proper way to use a mini-lathe. Can't hurt to learn a little something every once in awhile.
