Hi!
I am brand new to the PWD competition level. I have three boys and my oldest has been through three derby's now. My youngest hasn't entered his first car yet and will not for the next two years. But we have all caught the bug now and are really looking forward to competing with the best in the USA.
What I am curious about is workshops and getting organized. I would love to hear details or see some pictures of your workshops and how you have everything setup. Right now we are working in the kitchen on the counter and my wife is not really liking it yet. I want to build a workshop in the back yard (since we have four kids I had to convert the garage into another room already) and would like to setup properly.
I already have a shopsmith mark V and a bandsaw. I need a scroll saw and would like to build a CNC wood lathe/router device to help with building the cars as well (There are tons of designs on the internet). I thought about a little paint booth in a corner for spraying the cars as well. Of course this is a pipe dream and will not happen over night, but it is something I think is achievable.
Any ideas of tools that you find are a necessity or how you keep everything organized would be really cool to hear about!
Thanks,
Fred

WITH THE MARK 5 YOU HAVE A DRILL PRESS & YOU ALREADY HAVE A BANDSAW, A SCROLL SAW WOULD BE NICE; BUT YOUR FIRST PURSHASE SHOULD BE ( THE BLOCK) IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE

Thanks guys! I will be sure to check out those posts. I don't have a block, but I do have a axle tool to drill the holes in there. I didn't know about the block until after I made the previous purchase.
I am desperately trying to get my cars out for this weekend! Hopefully I can make it!
Thanks again!
Fred

I have a bandsaw too and dont see a big need for a scroll saw other than the time saved in changing blades.

Here are a few pics of my little workshop up by my track. It's a 12 X 12 room and it is were I go to get some piece and quiet. Here's my Sherline mini lathe I use to cut my own axles, also a storage bin on the wall to hold wheels, axles, needles, bushings, Micro-mesh Etc... Also I use the small drill press for polishing axles. This picture shows the Proxxon I use for drilling axle holes, and also my tool chest for storing various tools. The top shelves come in handy for storing stuff also. This shelf will hold a hobby spray booth eventually. The scroll saw has been moved since this picture. This shelf holds all my paints and painting supplies. The Band saw, scroll saw and disc/belt sander are located in another location just to keep the saw dust down. Now I just got to get my tunes set-up and I'll be good to go. I'll be able to RAAWWKK while I work on my cars.

All her crap is lined up down the wall on the other side of the track. Luckily, we have another big packhouse in front of this one that is used to store loads of stuff and a converted tobacco bulk barn with my 79 Z28 sitting in it. All this storage and it still doesn't seem to be enough. I need to have a yard sale.

Shadetree was just over this past weekend, he can vouch for me.

Hey Hey! What's this "he-man woman hating club about"? Carolina when you have that yard sale I want 1st dibs on the 79 Z28 If you do not have a ventilation fan in your paint station you should put one in (especially if the kiddies are in there when you're painting) Plus it keeps debrie down as well. Just something to think about.
