I have been having a problem with my paint recently, when I put my cars in the toob I have noticed the foam on top of the car is leaving the impressions in my paint. I use Duplicolor High build primer on the car and various paints all with the same results. The latest paint to give me trouble is: www.tamiyausa.com/product/category.php?sub-id=61500&page=4Italian Red Am I going to heavy with th primer? I thought I was sanding it down well. Should this be sanded down to the wood so as to only fill in the grain and then primed with a regular primer? Is it my paint? I use a lot of hobby paints, Testors,Pactra, and Tamiya. Also if I were to break down and buy two part auto paints, can these be used in an air brush? The brush I have is: www.testors.com/product/136949/A2705/_/Starter_Airbrushand this: www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX8161&P=FR double action. And how would I clean the brush with two part paints? I use lacquer paints almost exclusively,do emamel paints cure to a harder finish? Thanks

The paint you are using is fine...... However the cell walls of the foam can act as a "wick" that will pull solvents from below. Couple that with the pressure needed to hold the car in place & you can get impressions.
To reduce the chance of leaving marks, cut an old soft t-shirt into a strip about 2 inches wide and 7 inches long. Lay this between the car and the hold down foam.
Catalyzed urethanes are extremely durable, almost like a sheet of plastic. Cat-clears don't dry, they harden chemically. Kind of like epoxy...
You can shoot Cat-clears with your airbrush, just use the "heavy nozzle/needle" 1.5mm You ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY MUST fully disassemble the airbrush and throughly flush out ALL residue. Any residue left in any of the passageways will harden into a plastic mess....
I use a HVLP detail gun for shooting Cat-clears. I feel I get a better atomization of the clear. Which helps reduce orange peel.

Can the foam on the toob wick the solvents out a 6 week old lacquer paint job that has been waxed? Not likely.....
Lacquer paint never "cures" only dries. You can lay a rag damp with lacquer thinner on a 20 yr old Lacquer paint job and it will start to redissolve. Lacquer has a lot of durability drawbacks, thats one reason the Auto industry switched over to Acrylic Enamels.... and now use Urethanes.
Bones, the only other reason I can think of that is causing the impressions is the clamp down pressure. It's like a Catch-22.... too little clamp down pressure and the car won't stay in place, too much and it leaves marks.......
The soft cotton t-shirt should provide an extra layer of protection..... Light buffing/polishing should remove the marks.

Thanks again Fast, just a couple more questions. Would I be better off with emamels instead of lacquers? (2 part paints are better I know) And can Urethane clear work on a lacquer color paint job?

Thanks again Fast, just a couple more questions. Would I be better off with emamels instead of lacquers? (2 part paints are better I know) And can Urethane clear work on a lacquer color paint job? Lacquers hands down.....why? They dry very fast, that keeps dust nibs down. You can recoat anytime. More coats give great depth of color. Easy to repair mistakes, just wet sand when dry & reshoot. Because of quick dry/flash times you can tape off for additional color combos.
Enamels have advantages too... Readily available in rattle cans. Very low cost. Slow to dry, narrow recoat window, but after fully cured (7-21 days) a good shine and very durable. Less hazardous than Lacquers. Colors don't fade or chalk as bad as Lacquers.
Urethanes work great over Lacquers. Cat-Clears- Urethanes- work well over fully cured Enamels. Urethanes (catalyzed colors & clears) can really damage mucous membranes (lungs, throat, nose, eyes) if you don't wear the right protective gear. Heck, it can even be absorbed through your skin !!
At the very least you need an activated charcoal canister respirator. A full face air supply mask is best. Also because it can be absorbed through the skin, a full "shoot suit" is recommended.
Not the kind of stuff you want around the kids !!
