A couple of questions on finishing a paint job, How many of you put wax on your cars?
How long after the paint is dry do you wait to wax? Some car paint forums say to wait 3 months, Why?
Does wax help keep graphite from sticking to the car?
I've never been real good with paint but I keep trying. I now can get a decent coat on a car but keeping it nice is my new problem. Thanks for the help!

I waxed ruffneck one time. It is just painted with duplicolor but it shined it up a bit. It doesn't matter what I do to spruce up my cars by the time they get to Utah they look like they have been rolling around in a tool box for a year or two.

Thanks for the help! Merry CHRISTmas Santa Bones !! I wax all my cars, really gives them a finished look. My new favorite is Meguiar's NXT Tech wax, killer shine- very slick. Used to use Zymol (gotta love that coconut smell !) Because I use Catalyzed Automotive paint, I can wax within a couple of days. Some rattle-can enamels can take 30-45 days to fully cure Most rattle can lacquers should be fully out- gassed in 2-3 days. Of course, the more layers/coats you have of ANY type paint will effect cure times. Just a side note.... most paints now contain UV stabilizers. Putting the painted car out in the sun to dry will help the pigment solids cross-link and cure to a harder more durable finish. The sunlight (UV rays) react with the pigments. With Automotive Cat-clears, the graphite seems to not get a foothold. Most of the time the graphite will wipe right off, any residue that remains I can wipe off with a little mineral spirits on a rag. I'm not the fastest builder, so I have to work hard on making my cars LOOK[/b] fast ;D

I use the same wax as FAST, the Meguiar's. It really does give it a nice slick shine. I use HOK catalyzed clear and will usually give it 3 to 5 days before I wax it.
Anytime I pull the wheels and axles on a car, I'll wax it again.
Since I have gone to a #5 needle and tip for applying clear, I have not had to wet sand or use rubbing compound. The #5 tip and needle allows me to put more clear down and the overall finished look is nice and slick. Before I was using a #3 (same as paint) and the clear looked a little rippled and the only way to smooth it was to wet sand, and polish, polish, polish.

I have in the past, the year my younger son won district at scouts I waxed his car over & over one Sunday afternoon weather it helped don't know, but it also was the 1st. time I ever gave the axles a good polishing, ;D one thing I do know the Meguiars CLEANER-WAX does a job of cleaning off the graphite ;D & the slicker it is the less wind drag ; I had painted the car months before
