I compiled an order of paint steps from posts and PM's that I wanted to present for improvement; so, please feel free to add to or correct. My boys are wanting to do a sweet paint job for scouts this year as well as cars for proxy races. I have no idea how to buff (step 14). Thanks in advance.
1.CUT & SHAPE the body; use 80 grit then get the shape really smooth with 120 to 180.
2.BODY FILLER SKIM COAT over the wood (Evercoat MetalGlaze or Bondo) to cover the wood grain and to fill in holes
3.SAND/FILL/SAND/FILL—sand with 120 grit to make the body filler smooth. It may take a coat or 2 then finish sand them with 240 grit sand paper.
4.SKIM WITH GLAZING PUTTY (like Evercoat Polyester Glazing Putty) to fill in any pinholes or sand marks
5.SANDABLE PRIMER (3 coats) Spray a coat until it is covered, then let it dry 5 minutes; then spray another the same 5 minutes then one more. Then, let that dry for 1 hour.
6.SAND THE PRIMER with 240 and sand it smooth
7.FILL You should see some imperfection when sanding; if they are big enough that the next primer will not cover it you can mix more Evercoat MetalGlaze and wipe it in the scratch or ding to fill big voids; or, you can use any type of glazing putty for pinholes and sand scratches
8.PRIME/SAND/FILL/SAND Then primer, sand and if you need any additional filling after primer then you can use the glazing putty on the primer also...the finer you make your prep the better the paint job will look.
9.REPEAT STEP 8 two to three times. The last time sand it with 320-400 grit sand paper. Sand it thoroughly smooth without sanding through the primer coats.
10.WIPE DOWN Then wipe the car down with rubbing alcohol, but don't get it too wet with that (or use PPG Acryli-Clean pn#DX330 on a lint free cloth followed with a Tack-cloth).
11. SEALER PRIMER
12. BASE COATS
13. CLEAR COAT 3-4 coats of clear
14. SAND AND BUFF 2000 grit sand paper then buff to a high gloss
