This post is dedicated to TWO THINGS:
1. AWANA 1 wheels.
2. The power of tuning the cars.
Today, my daughter won 1st in the S FL State (regional) AWANA Grand Prix. She won last year out of 32 cars. This year there were 35. This year we used the AWANA one wheels for the first time. We are allowed to narrow the wheels so I narrowed the fronts (only took off 0.1g).
I was not optimistic at first, because I tuned the car on the Piantedosi AL track (nice drop). When I got there, they were using a home built AWANA wood track (which according to the leader was "official" AWANA specs. Anyway, the slope was really gradual and the test cars were REALLY slow. I was thinking "this is not good". To give you an idea of how the car ran, our WORST of the 4 times was over 5/100's better than the best time of any other car Having said that, our car averaged a measly 2.860 seconds @176mph on only a 32 ft track.. Last year the times were 2.4xx @ 200+mph on a different 32-ft track.
The second place car was about 2.92x. BUT HERE IS THE POWER OF TUNING.... I took a little girls car from our church, not made at all to our "customary" specs, and slapped some AWANA ones on it, tuned it, lubed it with Krytox, and gave it back to her to run today. She got THIRD place!!! SHe lost to the second place car by only ONE-ONE THOUSANDTH (1/1000)!!!
The car that was second had tungsten, krytox, and (what the guy said was) machined lathed AWANA wheels.....they may have been AWANA ones.... This girl's from our church third place car had fender washers (as weight) in 2 places both ahead of the rear axles, was cut slightly uneven and ran not too well at our local church race. .I took it home and tuned it, and it ran about equal to a car of mine that ran a 3.03 on Glenn's Track.
My daughter's car was lead-weighted and used Hob E Lube. Needless to say they were both thrilled, and I was more excited for the other little girl at first since it was her FIRST time, and she is a good friend of my daughter from school. THe AWANA ones are great and not near enough can be said about the effectiveness of tuning.
I will get pics up soon...I have a couple of clips, the the quality is not good since the lighting was bad and it was crowderd there.
Thanks
