I'm new here. Been searching around online for tricks and tips. My girlfrriend's son and myself are going to build a car for his Tiger Cub race. I have built cars in the past when I was in scouts. Many, many moons ago. Seems like the technology has evolved alot since the 70's. A guy at work told me to run a 3mm tap through the axel holes in the wheels. Less surface area and hold more graphite against axels. Makes sense to me. I haven't seen anything online about this mod. Any help? Bob

ON EBAY YOU CAN BY A TAP JUST FOR TAPING THE WHEEL BORES. SEARCH PINEWOOD DERBY & YOU SHOULD FIND IT.

I have tried the LH & RH 4-40 taps on two sets of wheels (3.4 g & 1.0 g). The bores were polished and burnished afterwards. Time trials were ran before and after tapping and I didn't see any improvement. I got the same exact times. I still plan on playing around with some different axle types and see what I get. My 2 cents worth.
