After getting a box 2"deep inside (I had a handgun case) and some 2' Styrofoam from Home Depot ($6). I traced the outline of the cars I wanted to fit in the area on some paper.

I then spray glue a tracing of the shapes on the foam (with 3m spray adhesive) and using a bandsaw or scroll saw, cut the shapes out. 2" thick for main pieces and from 1" strips, the car body shapes.

The pieces are then fit into the box. (I did this backwards, the heavy end of the cars should be at the base of the carring case).

The cars then can be placed into the box. (Some ribbon or cloth under the car body will allow safe removal from the shapes) You can even get real fancy and line the shapes with pool table felt or velveteen cloth to keep the pieces of Styrofoam out of your wheels.

Last cover the car body with some soft foam or cloth to keep the cars from moving during carrying or shipment. This idea should work for any shape box or, if like me, you may ship the entire carry case inside a mailing box for further protection. This also works for carry-on for a live race - hint hint - see you at the next PDDR race!

GREAT IDEA!! ;D The step by step instructions & photos make it look so easy .
The creative and helpful ideas from the members of this board never cease to amaze me.
Thanks A-Line! Being all the way down in the Sunshine State, makes it hard for me to go in person.

Time to get cars ready to ship for the upcoming race - let's see if this box can protect the cars?
Good Luck!

Hey Mood - the Derby Worx site took the post off about 1 day after I put it in. I put a new thread without the link this morning because I want to see undamaged cars from whatever the source. We will see how long that lasts. Boy there must be some bitter feelings for them to censure any reference to PDDR.

Thanks Steve/A-Line for the inspiration!! ;D[/color] Had some closed-cell foam scraps laying around.... Gonna put a copy of the photo sequence in box for the Jewkes Bros. to know how the puzzle goes back together for shipping. ( Have you ever noticed when you type 'Jewkes' spell-check wants to change it to 'Jerkies'......why???) Bet if Glenn EVER USED spell-check he'd fix the 'glitch'

Umm, yeah. That's a swell idea, now if it weren't D-day for us to get our car up there I'd take that project on. We're going to use a prior carrying case for March and make tracings before we ship it so we have something to do while we wait and hold our breath. Thanks for the great how-to!
