Most people have stories that date back ins the 70's, 80's, but my is pretty "young". My wife and I took our 9 month old acrosss Canada to live in Calgary-Alberta in July 2009. Early in 2010, some church leaders organized a "Cub's Pinewood Derby Race" for all families within the community. I was never involved with cubs or scouts while young, so I never heard of Pinewood Derby Cars.( I am originally from Brazil) I once build a CO2 dragster that won 1st place, so I taught I could do well. I spend many nights researching on the net about this gravity powered machines, and came up with a design and some ideas. My wife was laughing at me, as those with "tones of experience" would somoke my car on the first heats . We had to use the cubs kit, which includes old plastic wheels and nails. I shaped the "axles" according to the 91SGA design, polish them to a mirror shine. I lighted the wheel to less than 1g each, and tryed to keep them as round as possible ( all of that on a drill). I got the car well aligned, with the rear and front wheels canted, and a raised wheel. Even using slots, I managed to do that, but it took a LOONG time. I name the car Car-root 74, for the year of my birth and the shape of the car. Race day came, and I got it! I got first place and got hoocked on this thing. I felt like I was a 8 years-old cub with a trophy to show my parents! The only problem is, this is addictive!!! Now I am working on 3 cars, hoping first to get them under 3 sec, and latter to be really competitive in the PDDR. Attachments:

welcome to the party man! It's a fun, frustrating hobby. (Usually fun for you and frustrating for your wife.) Have a good time, ask questions, post pictures, and make friends. This is a good place to be.
;D ;D
