Yes, the video is sad. Mostly because of the music but I think we all felt bad for the kid as well. As sad as this was, I actually was able to smile a bit because it reminded me of myself in the past. I raced BMX for about 18 years and when I started out, I got killed. Not everyone got trophies and because of losing like that, I learned we don't win at everything but it also taught me to try my hardest at everything I do. I am sure this kid will find himself a winner real soon! Thanks for the video David.

I just could not resist replying to this post, even though this topic has gone stale long ago. I just found this *** *** TODAY *** ***. The kid's father had posted a video of 'How to Win Pine Wood Derby' which is of them building the car that is in the sad video.
My personal favorite, the hand file in a drill chuck reaming out the wheel bore. Maybe that explains the 'wobbly wheels' he mentions in the race video.

How about instead of looking down on dads that do not know as much as you guys, instead you try to see what I see in this video? I see a dad and his son participating in a project together. I know you guys sell product here, but how about credit to dads that don't take the easy road buying pre-prepped products and spend time with their boy trying it on their own.

I know you guys sell product here, but how about credit to dads that don't take the easy road buying pre-prepped products and spend time with their boy trying it on their own. I admire any parent that participates in a project with their child. I don't believe anyone is being negative here. Perhaps you need to view the responses in a different way. Many of us can relate to this video...both the good and not so good of it.
I think the point being made here is, that even with little experience, you can achieve a great outcome...if your willing to ask for help and continue to try. The point is that there are people with more knowledge who could offer suggestions for improvement. No one is trying to "sell" product. Most cub scouts receive a kit to build their first cars. (and some purchase this kit) Boosting product? I don't think so.
Most of us can relate to things not always going as well as we hoped. When it comes to our children, we want them to feel success and achievement. There is always room for improvement. No one is "dissing" on dads. I applaud any parent willing to take time with their children...even willing to accept failure as a possible result. It helps build character.
Let's be real...it's not called "Build a pinewood derby car..." It's called Pinewood Derby Racing, even in scouts. The idea of racing is always to compete and win if possible. Otherwise, what is the point of "racing"? And, yes, there's the bonding and spending time together which is also very important. Let's not assume that there is negativity in a video that is simply touching to watch and something we can relate to on some level.
Who wouldn't love to see the child in this video build a car that competes and wins?

I agree woodworker. I personally view Pinewood as a 'team' experience. I consider myself the coach and R&D where my son is the builder/driver. I'm not knocking Dads/scouts working on their cars together. I've done the same thing with my son and learned a lot about the subject. In the beginning I knew very little about the subject and even help on the internet can be contradictory. Pinewood derby cars are the simplest things: 1 block of wood, 4 nails and 4 wheels. BUT they represent a very complicated physics problem. Even worse, the scouts answer to the physics problem is graded in front of his friends and family at the derby. It truely is a double edged sword where winning is really positive and where losing is really negative.
I agree with digs too, we have all seen this happen where a build goes wrong. In my son's scout pack I personally help every cub who needs it. We have a 'test & tune' night before the derby where I've taken these desparately slow cars aside with the cub and given the car a quick going over straightening wheels and giving it a decent lube. I also try to educate the Dad on techniques and theories. If the car can win even 1 heat the scout has a win to focus on and they take it away as a positive experience. So far every cub I helped has had a victory and they leave that night feeling their little car is 'awsome' and wins races.
So to all you Dad/scout teams out there, keep up the good work! Do your research and follow the Cub motto, do your best!
Having said all that, consider why did the dad post the 'saddest derby' video at all? It doesn't make sense to me, and I've put way too much time in it trying to understand the motivation. It was obviously a bad experience for his son. But why edit a video highlighting the baddest part of the experience, mix it with depressing music, and then post it to the internet for all to see where it will haunt this little fellow the rest of his life? That is the part I don't understand. My hope is this year he will produce a video showing how well he did this year.

Digs - I said nothing about boosting product. What I did say was I understood that the PDDR and Jewkes are both products here and meant no slight in my comment. Merely stating I thought about a father and son doing this project together to the best of their abilities.
