Hello all,
I have been reading through the forum for a few days and joined yesterday. I have already picked up so much and thank you all for the informative forum.
This is my sons last year as a Cub Scout and he really wants to a.) make it to the district race again and b.) at least finish in the top 3 there.
In the past 4 years he has been to district 2 times as a 1st place car and once as an alternate. Our pack race is on an old home made wood track (32') and our district races are on a 42' best track .
I am planning on ordering The Block in the next day or two as well.
Any and all input will be GREATLY appriciated. My pack/district rules are as follows:
1. Races will be held by rank (Tigers will race against Tigers, etc.)
2. A parent or adult guardian must be present with the Cub Scout during registration and his race
3. Each Cub Scout must use a 2009 or 2010 Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Kit (axles, wheels, body wood) and should have made the car for this years race. Kits purchased from non-BSA sources (internet, department store, etc.) may not meet standards or may not fit on a BSA standard track or finish line mechanisms. Judges may disqualify and car from a kit.
4. Wheel bearings, washers, bushings, springs or suspension are not permitted.
5. The wheelbase of the car cannot be altered in any way (axle grooves may not be spread apart, moved closer together, or shifted closer to the front or back). If an axle groove has not been cut square at the factory, it may be filled in and re-cut in the same place.
6. Wheels may not be altered in any way (shape, painting, etc.). ONLY mold projections on the wheel surface may be removed by lightly sanding as long as the shape or size is not changed. All 4 wheels must be present and must come in contact with the track.
7. Overall body width is not to exceed 2 ¾”. Length is not to exceed 7”. Height should not interfere with track starting or finishing mechanisms. Car must have a minimum 3/8” vertical clearance as to not drag on the track lane strip.
8. Cars will be weighed in and must not be over 5.00 ounces. If they weigh more, there will be tools available to reduce the weight, but this will be up to the parents to do so. Race times will not be delayed for alterations.
9. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on your car. Any detailing or decorative ornamentation must meet all size and weight restrictions and be securely attached.
10. No oil, grease or silicone spray should be used on axles or wheels. Only powdered graphite is permissible and must be applied before entering the building (NO graphite lube is allowed in the Church or the Mall).
11. Race officials have the right to inspect and reject any car based on the stated rules, or if the car violates scouting spirit of fair play or common sense. (If in doubt, please make arrangements BEFORE the day of the race.)
12. Registered cars will be given a Derby inspection number affixed to the car by the registrar at weigh in and will then be immediately placed in the pit area. Cars will not be allowed to leave the pit area for adjustments.
13. Cars WILL NOT be touched by anyone after weigh-in. Cub Scouts will be the only ones to pick up and deliver the car to the starting position after his name has been called. No work may be done on cars once they are weighed-in except in an emergency… such as a wheel falling off.
14. If a car looses a wheel in a race, the Cub Scout and one adult only will be permitted to try to fix it in the race pit area. Repair time limit is 5 minutes.
15. Each Cub Scouts car number will be called 3 times to come to the starting position. If after a reasonable time the boy does not show up, his car will be eliminated from the race.
16. Any 2 cars tying will be re-run immediately. Any close finishes will be judged by the finish line judges whether to be re-run again or to declare which is the winner.
17. Decisions of the judges shall be final.
Thank you all in advance.
