PDDR Steer -vs- Steer on smaller table

Below is a method to match a smaller temporary steering table to the Jewkes PDDR steering table.

ACME has posted instructions for building an 8 foot table like PDDR has. Build a table like this for best results. There is no substitute for an 8 foot steering table. However the method below will get you much closer than previously possible...

Below are tables containing the radius of a circle that your car will be traveling on when steering so many inches on the PDDR table.

How to use the tables:

Locate the PDDR steer you are wanting to match in the PDDR table below and write down the coresponding radius. Then find the table for 6 feet, 4 feet or 3 feet below that coresponds to the length of your steering table. Find the radius that you wrote down earlier. This will give you the steer on your table that matches the steer on the PDDR table.

NOTES on steering tables:

PDDR table slopes 3.5" in 8 feet. So if you have a 4 foot table for example slope it about 2 inches, etc...

Also note. below tables assume that you mark a spot 7 inches from the edge of the table and place the DFW on top of that line. This allows you to use these tables for diffrent wheelbases without needing to change your tables.

The cool thing is in the past I thought 12" in 8 feet would be 6" in four feet.

That would result in a steer of over 24" in 8 feet!

A question from a rookie to the pddr track... how much steer is needed on a "block drilled" block pure stocker with com in the 3/4" to 5/8" range and Jewkes pure stock wheels to prevent the wobbles? thanks

Optimal Steer and wobbles are not always related. Be sure to read the Going Sub 3.0 thread in the Pure Stock section. There is steering information in there for two of my Pure Stockers. Also that you are starting with a block of wood that is 1 3/4 inches wide and not wider and that you are running the Jewkes axles as well. If you are running BSA axles on the PDDR track to practice for a BSA race then that is diffrent (Let me know). ALso watch Glenn's The Block video in how he does the layout of the car for drilling axle holes. An important step...

Thanks for the info on sub 3 thread. I had missed it.
I'm sure that my block is drilled for sub-3 as it was drilled my one of our own national champs. ;D

The wheels are jewkes pure stockers. My jewkes axles have not come in yet, but are coming. I'm currently running another after market axle....not the kit bsa axles.

I was looking at the slow motion video last night, and my car was wobbling after only a few inches from the start. And of course after it starts, there's no turning back. When it did not wobble, it runs 2.986.

Check everything on the list and see if you misssed anything. Was your COM 3/4 or there abouts and was the block 1 3/4 in the rear? With the wheels pushed into 1/32 from the body?

Ask the National Champion about your axle bend

When I was a kid, I had a MAD magazine and in it they were doing spoofs on famous quotes by people. One of them was General MacArthur saying "I shall return" and off to the side a private is saying "and so will a bad check". So when you were using the terminators line, it made me think of that.

Man did we get off topic here.

If I had a tuning table, I might be able to decipher what all those numbers mean.

The new Jewkes axles are great the 91s along with the new edge Pure Stockers. PM Glenn or go to MB4hire for them.

Perhaps an axle was bent or your axles are too skinny for the holes drilled....

There are a lot of numbers. I found a formula that can calculate the radius of a circle based on steer on the PDDR table. Kind of like the turning radius of an auto...

This allows the comparison of PDDR tables to smaller tables. Much closer at least.

For a new racer the ability to dial in a steer on a car is critical. If the steer is not right the car will not be fast. The numbers here allow a builder to dial in the steer of a car until they are able to get an eight foot steering board.

Then when you get a fast car you can build an identical car COM wise and other wise and then dial in the steer and be in the ballpark for correct steer...

Previously myself and others have tried to adopt Glenn's suggestions for steer on the forum to our own cars. Not having an 8 foot smooth level surface we have improvised. And for example on a 4 foot board simply halfed the steer.

In reality the car on Glenn's board at 4 feet is sitting at an angle already. If you simply half the steer you would have to stop the car on Glenns table at 4 feet and place it straight again.

The error caused an incredible amount of oversteer. I was bitten by this in my first race with CoalCar. Adjusting the steer way too high....

Hopefully this info will help folks in a simmilar situation..
