I really think the main reason a builder glues the axles is the same reason everybody else glues their axles, so the alignment doesn't get all screwed up and more importantly, the wheels don't fall off the car. These sellers don't want the ebay purchaser to give them negative feedback because anything could happen to the car once the mailman has it. The wheels and axles could get screwed up in shipping, the buyer's kid might not win one race because his wheel fell off and all his buddies make fun of him and he starts crying and then his buddies make more fun of him because he is crying and this makes him cry even harder and then he wets his pants in front of God and everybody and this one incident scars him for life and he later turns into a serial killer driven by the smell of pine, urine, and cold wet underwear. It all didn't matter that earlier he was playing Dukes of Hazzard with the car before the race. So, to save the free world we must all glue our axles in place!
That negative feedback will hurt their sales more than the videos posted here will. If you know about these videos or what P-D-D-R or WIRL is, you probably aren't the person buying a car on ebay to race as your very own. You may buy a car because something about it intrigues you. As for the autopsy, if I buy a new "tv" and tell my friend that it is nice then we all leave it at that and watch the game. If I'm thinking of buying a new "tv" and see a consumer report on it, then yeah, I would like to know all the go-ins and go-outs. What is the CoG, does it have grooved axles, or is it lubed with wd-40? Kind of like the same reason you inexplicably look at a car accident, you don't want to, but in the end you do because you are curious.
Use a good pair of needle-nose pliers or vise grips, you can grip the axle head and twist slightly. You should break the epoxy/glue's adhesion and pull the nail out.

I have been watching the ebay shootout with great interest. I can see the reason for people making bold claims about their cars on ebay. You are a father or mother with a son and an unopened box and you have no tools. Your derby is a week away and you have nothing done. You look on ebay and flashy advertising sells, plain and simple. Did the Jewkes car run their excellent Edge wheels? If they did, what gram wt were they? Since the Jewkes own all the cars I would like to see a tear-down inspection, were the cars really BSA legal or are they bending the rules? What detailing extremes if any, did these builders do to their cars? I would like to see a value chart posted. Kind of like the best bang for your buck category. Please show the dates when these cars were purchased on ebay, it really kills the naysayers when you prove your point in black and white. "the wheels on the car are the things that make contact with the road" I JUST CAN'T GET THAT ***** SONG OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!! We ran a set of our "Pure Stockr's" not our Super Stockr's As far as the inspection, I would say all cars entered in this race would pass BSA standards, but there are many different sets of rules for other Scout Derby Races. I have seen over the years many sets of rules written for each group/groups. That would be a question to ask the builder that made these cars. One can only see the outside of the cars, without taking them apart and checking Axles and removing all the paint to check the block of wood you can only see what you can see. Allot of the inspections that we have witnessed over the years, usually the kid that had the fanciest paint job that looked like a grown-up painted it got the most attention from the inspector. The overall quality of the car, most people say "there's no way the kid built that one".... and things like that. You know this is a father and son thing and not all fathers no how to build the car anyways. Also we have run a allot of Derby's for Scout groups in our area. We observe the peoples reactions and try to use them to better our system. We have found out that the kid that takes 1st place has his few seconds of glory and to see the smile on his face is priceless... ;D But then the demons come into play ..... These are just some statements from parents and other's after the race... "I bet you didn't do anything on the car... I bet your Dad built the whole thing" "There's no way you built that" "You probably paid someone to make it for you" "You cheated" "That car is probably not even legal" "You bought that from off of eBay" and so on and on they go tearing down the kid and turning his BIGGEST DAY up-side-down.. I've even seen them cry... Thats sad to see this happen... Instead of "WOW great job" How are we going to beat you next time your car is fast... Here's a little story that happen to my brother's boy on his race day. Early 2006 Most of you have seen his car "POCKET ROCKET" He designed the car, drilled the Axel holes, cut it out, and installed the weight, and sanded and sanded and sanded, his uncle helped him paint it... I said do you want to paint it, or do you want your uncle to help you. he said "I want it shinney"... Now for another interesting part of that night. The competition was pretty hot from last year but this year was heating up even more. My brother stages and starts all the cars at the races and one of the other cars that was entered in the race was a Black car that looked like it was one of the Physic's Teachers cars... We both said at the same time nooooo, is it??? nahhhh, and then proceeded with the race... We had a 16 car Field and then when the race was all over then I was talking with some of the fathers and the truth came out. The Black car took 2nd and then the questions started to fly.... I asked him so where did you put your weight and he said in the back... then I said wow those wheels looked like they have been machined a little did you do them or where did you get them done they look good.... then he leaned over and said I guess I better be honest with you , I bought this car to beat you, have you ever heard of the Physic's Teach??? WOW I said yes really? Yeah he said I had to beat you this year but I guess I still didn't do it.... I said how much did you have to give for that.... He said enough..... It goes to show you what some people will try to do to see the smile on there boys face, but thats OK because that is a good thing to see...

Seeing that smile on a kids face is pretty priceless. Our pack had their race today and the grins on the boy's faces are really great. One of the moms said in their old pack that everybody gets a trophy just like in soccer. (Our pack hands out participant ribbons to all and trophies just to the boys who move on to districts.) Her son told her he didn't want to win the biggest trophy but he would like the smallest one. She told him that it probably wasn't to be, and next year he would have to work more on his car as she saw his car times. (it ran pretty good) She stated that not winning is just as important as winning and you learn a lot from both experiences. How do you handle jealous parents that rip the heart out of kids? ?

I've read the last few posts and Im not sure what questions to answer or where to start, so if somebody wants to direct specific questions at me, I will be happy to answer, since I was the big loser and have nothing hide.
I do all different variety of cars, but I think mine had standard wheel base in slots, but I usually try not to glue the axles in place. If I do, it is usually a small bead which should break out pretty easily. I have somebody lathe them for me as I do not have a lathe, but I do cone hub and polish the hubs myself. I also do my own axles. You can see the paint job was quality, especially for the price. I sand the wood to 600 grit, then sand to 600 again after primer. ( I wont say what primer I use) The paint was the metallic line of Rustoleum. It really goes on nicely for a canned paint. The clear was the Krylon Fast drying enamel. I have over an hour total time just in sanding/painting.
My main issue is NOT the actual building of the car, it is the fine-tuning. I observe it on my track and get the time. If it doesnt look like it "behaved strangely" on the track but the time is not great, I dont know what to do next.
Nyoil "seams" to work on my cars down here in the heat. When I spin the wheels with my air compress to break them in, I can still hear the buzzing sound no matter how much graphite I seam to use. When I use Nyoil (now I use Krytox) the noise goes away...I was taught that the sound is friction and no sound is no friction...we know what that means.
Feel free to read my new listings....My ads are no longer HYPE and do not dis other builders...They are straight forward and do not make any false claims. I have NEVER said "fastest car on Ebay", etc. I do spend lots of time on them though and my winners so far are probably (as you said above) from weaker groups.
I will a anwer any questions about my cars...I want to get better.
Glenn...I thought you would Email me with your number.
Thanks RC

so, Joker, WHICH cars are you racing in February? Would you be surprised if I told you I was going to send in 11 or 12 cars? All capable of beating Casino... lol.. just kidding, to be in the same league as Casino is an honor. Thanks Bro! Hey, you are going to be tough to beat MR. 2006 STOCK CHAMPION........I know how hard you've been working in the shop lately.......putting out some units.......practice makes perfect! Pat - are you gonna retire DD? Casino is going on the shelf until some other fast big axle wants a "match" race. 11 or 12, WOW!!!........I will say this - at least 5, maybe 6 will come from Wildcard Racing.......(the duo - Jackpot & Slot-Machine will finally make it to Utah......my boys are going to send in Sharkbite II & El Tigre & I have a mystery "pure-stocker" that will show up) - this thread makes you really want to build one.

Had an interesting conversation with Glenn tonight. THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE/HELP! I appreciate the positive comments on the building and looks of the car. Even though I myself tuned it horribly, I am glad that the car was "capable" of producing better times with proper tuning. The one flaw I did see with the testing was using a kit car compared to built cars. Obviously if Glenn knows how to tune a car well, that played a vital factor in the race outcome. Would like to see a video with the new tuned car. Thanks again for all your help! RC

Here are two quick poll questions,
Do you think ebay sellers who mention WIRL or PDDR in their auctions have helped or hurt the racing leagues? Do you think these ads have brought more attention to the sport?

Have any of car builders sent in new cars for a retest? If they did, will we see the results?

WHen Season/Sales slow, I will send in another car. Since we found my main issues were tuning, it will give me a chance to work on that a little more.. I could send an AWANA car to test out. Cant "compare" to BSA cars, but you can compare to your "ususual" standard AWANA cars. Thanks RC
