How far should I go with axle prep, in terms of grit? Last year I went to 2000 grit, and then polished it with some micro paste (can't remember which). We won the scout derby easily. However, I heard that exceeding around 1000 grit is counterproductive, because the axle doesn't hold graphite well when super polished. What's the consensus on grit for axles these days?

I would go as high as I could on the axles like 12,000 then polish the wheel bores with novus2 the polish the wheel bore good the graphite the real trick is to make sure the axles are clean after polishing the axles use alcohol to clean axle & wheel bores before burnishing bore with graphite ;D

I just got the polishing kit from Jewkes read the instructions which seem to be simple enough, but it didn't say how far to go up on the polishing grit. The Jewkes site lists up to 3000 grit, yet there is high grit paper included along with the leather strip and string.
How far do I go up when using the 91SA axles or the BSA speed axles?
I'm running out of time so I'm going to go to 3000 grit tonight.

What's the consensus on grit for axles these days? 2,000 grit is fine...using finer grits than 1,000 will not be counterproductive. It sounds like what you have been doing will work great. Find what works best for you and keep it up!

The string is to apply graphite in the wheel bores and for rolling the wheel on the string against your leg so it will polish the graphite in the wheel bores.

Does anyone have any data on how much time can actually be reduced with various levels of axle and bore prep? I have always thought that some of the intense focus on axle/bore was a bit of red herring thrown out to confuse others into loosing focus on the largest players like COM, raised front wheel, alignment (keeping the back tires off the rails and slight steer to dominant front) and of course low inertia wheels if the rules allow. WIth that said I would have to believe that a larger axle with less slop and wheel wobble would be a good thing, but in most BSA races this is against the rules.

I think you need to prep your wheels with white grease and move your COM to 2" in front of the axle. This should speed you up ;D

Has anyone found anything faster than Jig? I can get very close to Jig with other silicone sprays, but cannot beat Jig. There should be something faster. It appears it's the molecular size of the silicone that's the key. It looks like it's in the range of 15 to 30 cst viscosity. Things other than silicone have not produced any fast results.
