Hey guys,
Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Scott Ricks and I live in a little town just outside of Atlanta named Conyers in the state of Georgia. I am relative new to pinewood derby. It all started last year when our church started a Royal Ambassadors chapter and annouced they would be having their first RA derby. My oldest son wanted to participate so away we went. Needless to say, we didn't fair very well and our car barely even finished. Then came cub scouts. My middle son was in first grade and came home so excited one day about the opportunity to join cub scouts where he would get to go camping and fishing and learn all kinda neat things, so we sign him and his older brother up and I have to say we have really enjoyed scouts. At the yearly Christmas party, my two sons were give pinewood derby kits for the upcoming derby in Feburary. You can imagine the feeling I had in my stomach knowing how bad I was at building these cars. Then came the evolution and transformation.
I spent the next 3 months reading, and researching and buying books and tools and supplies to try and learn as much as I could about what to do. Thanks to Randy at Max-V as he has great products and really helped me out into become a Dad without a clue to a Dad who could actually build cars that would be competitive.
We participated in our first Derby in Scouts and won first and second place overall. We then went to district and took first and second place there. Then came RA's again where we built cars and won at the church level, then regional, then state. We just got back from Indianapolis IN for the National RA race where my middle son took third place in the the Nationals.
Now that derby seson is over, i kinda felt a void because I wasn't coming home ever night and polishing axles, or prepping wheels. I began looking around and found WIRL right in my home town. So I packed up our district winning cud scout cars and sent them just knowing that we would run away with more victories. Guess what? I found out I wasn't that fast, just hadn't run against any real competition. I joined the board and became friends with several of the racers over there and they have helped me to get up to speed and become competitive on this level. I then found PWDR and found that many of the same guys racing at WIRL raced there as well. So I began sending cars ther as well and have met alot of fast guys and great friends.
Now as to why I am here. This is where the fastest two guys in the world are and I sure look forward to putting a car on their track to see how I stack up. I plan on attending Bluegrass so got some work to do to get ready for that race, but as soon as that is over, I be joining in with you guys for some more fun.
I have been bitten by the PINEWOOD BUG and I guess the only cure is to Proxy Race. Hope to see you guys at Bluegrass and on the PDDR track soon.
Thanks
Scott
